Schloss Hugenpoet Hotel
Hotel Overview
The Schloss Hugenpoet Hotel is a member of Relais &
Chateaux.
It is one of the architectural jewels of the Ruhr valley. The traditional
moated castle dating back to the 17th century offers its guests an atmosphere
full of customized hospitality, whilst its beautiful scenery ensures relaxation
and rest. The castle is ideally situated between the cities of Dueldorf and
Essen; it is easy to reach and a perfect base for business people and trade fair
visitors. This beautiful manor is also highly commendable for short stays of
people who want to get away from mainstream vacationers.
HistoryThe first part of the word "Hugenpoet" namely "Hugen",
comes from the term sometimes still used in the region today "Huge"
which means toad. The suffix "poet" is synonymous with pool, puddle or
mire. Hence, "Hugenpoet" could be translated as "toad pool".
In times gone by there were once two farmsteads here called "Unterer
Hugendiek" and "In der Hugenpoet". When a moated castle was built
not far from these two farmsteads, it was given the name "Hugenpoet".
It was first mentioned in 778 as a Royal demesne for Charlemagne.
