Villa Maroulas
Hotel Overview
A luxurious privately owned villa in the beautiful Venetian village of
Maroulas, an outstanding location, providing peace and tranquillity for all,
yet only minutes away from Rethymnon, the cultural and artistic heartbeat of Crete.
HistoryThe villa has two wings. The first wing of the villa is a
two-storeyed building which was once part of a larger farmhouse. It has
all the architectural characteristics of the Venetian era. The second
wing of the villa is a one-storeyed building that used to be an olive
press, originally constructed during the period of Turkish rule.
The
recent renovation of the building has shown great respect for the
original character of the building, but has also incorporated all the
modern facilities one would expect to find in an exclusive "home away
from home".
The two wings of the villa connect via a modern covered
walkway designed by the internationally renowned architect Yiannis
Kalitsounas – who has created a fusion of light, glass and space,
bringing different times and cultures together.
Location
The privately owned villa, which is a listed
building, has a magnificent sea-view, and is situated on a hillside just 6 km
from Rethymnon, in the historic village of Maroulas. It is just 3km from some of
the best beaches on the North Coast of the island. The village has been
classified as a ‘heritage’ site. Most of the buildings date back to at least the
Venetian era and no new construction work can be carried out without the
cooperation of the archaeological department. It is, however, a living,
breathing community, too! The village has two tavernas and two kafeneions. There
is a bus connection to Rethymnon, twice a day. For visitors arriving by plane,
the village is conveniently situated: Heraklion airport is just 80 km away, and
Hania airport is even closer – just 60km.
Finding
Maroulas Leaving Rethymnon, going eastwards: From the village of
Platanias, take the road to Arkadi. Follow this road for about 2km. On

is a 3-way junction. Take the right turn to Maroulas and follow this
road until you reach the central square of the village.
