The hotel's impressive main building was built during the 19th century (1857) in Vaporia, the aristocratic district of Ermoupolis, the capital. It impresses fans of neo-classical beauty as it has been preserved and much of it has been kept intact with its Parian marble balconies, the special antefixes, archaic gables and wooden-carved eaves that are still present.
The building was formally designated a historical landmark in 1988, and it was extended over the years and adapted to the needs of the modern age, mixing the 19th century aesthetics with all the comforts of a luxury hotel.
Syrou Melathron's rooms are characterized by style and finesse. Everywhere, the aristocracy and the pictures of a bygone period are obvious and coexist harmoniously with the modern comforts given.
History
Syros is located in the middle of the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Cycladic islands complex. Its name derives from the words "Sour" or "Osoura", that have the meaning of rocky. Hermoupolis, is the Capital of Syros Island as well of the Cycladic province. The first inhabitants of the city were mainly refugees coming from the islands of Chios, Psara and Hydra.
After the liberation of Greece from Turkish occupation, in 1821, the city gradually developed to according to be the major commercial and cultural cent4er of the country. The unique buildings structured according to the "neoclassic" rhythm, are the indisputable monuments of that period. The Syrou Malatron hotel is one of these buildings.
