For over 25 years, on the slopes of Pendeli in the lands of Dionysus
and his mother Semeli, George Kokotos has been practising the ageold art of fine
wine production; giving to his wines the name of their muse “Semeli”.
During the latter part of the 1970’s, George Kokotos, a civil engineer by
profession, created a small winery in Stamata, Attica. The vineyards are
situated on the slopes of Penteli, the mountain that gave its marble for the
building of the Parthenon. It was here, according to the legends of Ancient
Greece, that Dionysus, the mythological God of Wine, and his mother Semeli lived.
The Semeli winery is a boutique estate, focusing on the production of
high quality, handcrafted wines. There has been a continuous refinement of
techniques in the cellar and a deeper understanding of the terroir with each
vintage. Commercial success followed, with national and international acclaim.
Determined to preserve Semeli’s commitment to quality, but also not to overlook
market opportunities, Kokotos created a second estate named Domaine Helios
in the appellation region of Nemea in the Peloponnese.
