The Hotel Convento de Sao Paulo was refurnished in 1993 and is now a four star hotel
unit, one of the Portuguese de Charme Hotels.
Lage
The Convento de São Paulo is located on the slopes of the Serra d’Ossa mountain range
between Estremoz and Redondo. It was constructed in 1182, by monks who needed a spiritual place in which to pray.
Today, it is one of the most refined and comfortable hotels in the country. According to chronicles, the Convento de São Paulo has been visited by many illustrious figures over the centuries, most notably King Sebastian, King John IV and Catherine of Bragança, who married King Charles II of England in 1661.
The Hotel’s interior features an important collection of Portuguese tiles – more than 54,000 in total – along with frescoes, low relief terracottas and many other attractions such as a Florentine Fountain depicting the four seasons and ancient Church classified as a national monument.
Food & Beverages
The Hotel’s Ermita Restaurant specialises in traditional Alentejan cuisine, where
guests the chance to sample the rich tastes of products cultivated on the estate, accompanied
by wines from all over region. The Restaurant service concentrates on the traditional Alentejo
cuisine, using products grown in the orchards and vegetable gardens of the Monastery – fruit,
vegetables, olive oil, lamb, meat, etc. - and the wines come from the renown local surrounding
vineyards.
Notable for its large inviting fireplace, the Cascata Bar and its adjoining Games
Room offers Snooker and various other games. The chance to forget about the stress of city
life.
Outside lies the Hotel’s Swimming Pool, which is entirely surrounded by a natural shelter of
trees and bushes.
