GOLF COURSES:
Golf and superb Golf Courses have always been synonymous with St Andrews, the legendary
Home of Golf. At St Andrews Bay, the Hotel has combined the skills, expertise and
personalities of Gene Sarazen, Bruce Devlin and Sam Torrance to create a magnificent Golf
Resort boasting two cliff top courses that embody that special association.
The Torrance Course: The Torrance Course, designed by the late Gene Sarazen and
winning Ryder Cup Captain, Sam Torrance, is a par 72, 7,037-yard course that sweeps its way
round the Hotel and down to the coastal edge. The signature hole is the 17th, a par 4, 452
yards from the championship tee named 'Sam's favourite'. After playing your way
down to the rugged cliff edge the hole meanders its way back towards the bay, with the medieval
skyline of St Andrews in the distance. With the sea and the out of bounds on the right and a
menacing bunker on the left of your landing area, all that's left is the second shot, 210
yards normally into the prevailing wind with a 70 foot gorge running along the front of the
green, two good putts and you have made par.
The Devlin Course: The Devlin Golf Course was designed by Bruce Devlin and the late
Gene Sarazen, a truly magnificent 72 par, 7,049 yard championship course that sweeps its way
along the rugged seaside landscape. With beautifully sculpted rolling greens, undulating
fairways, dramatic elevation changes and greens perched on cliff tops, this is a truly unique
golfing experience. The signature 17th hole is a par 4, 443 yards from the tee to the
picturesque green. After the initial difficult tee shot the green is well protected by pot
bunkers and steep drops, but should you find a safe arrival on the putting surface then two
good puts should secure par. The most dangerous attribute of the course is the fear in the mind
of the golfer. Greens appear suspended, nothing but water and the horizon are in view which
puts doubt in club selection and makes accuracy paramount. However, this drama adds to the
sense of excitement generated by the prospect of tackling such a demanding course.
